United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
Agenda item:
1. International Cooperation in Addressing the Chernobyl Aftermath
Year: 1986
Description:
UNDRR (United Nations Disaster Office for Risk Reduction) is the successor of UNDRO (United Nations Disaster Relief Co-ordinator) which was founded in 1971 in order to address the emerging need to have an international response division for the natural disasters. It was essentially established for these purposes - to establish and maintain cooperation between UN and disaster-struck nations, coordinating relief activities on the scene, establishing and maintaining cooperation with other relief organizations and finally to promote study, prevention, control and prediction of natural disasters.
Chernobyl is the nuclear power plant which was built in between the years of 1970 and 1977, and immediately started working in Pripyat (what is now it belongs to Ukraine) in Soviet Socialist Republics Union. Having opened its fourth unit in 1983 and that worked only for three years, in 1986 it has suffered an incident due to an accident that occurred during a test, and destroying the entire unit, released harmful substances to the atmosphere as well as emitting radiation. Its immediate effects were not so much, however, long time effects would be unprecedently dire. And the committee will work on to diminish those effects for future references should any occur once again.
